ATLANTA - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated Georgia State 6-1 Sunday in Atlanta. The Cardinals improve to 18-4 on the season.
Georgia State claimed the doubles point as Luka Bernard and Miha Lisac defeated Octavian Nicodim and Cody Conley 8-5 at the top seed. Georgia State secured their only point of the day after Albano Franco and Matias Ormaza defeated Matt Mayer and Harry Walsh 8-3. Louisville's Sebastian Aspillaga and Jakob Gustafsson defeated Nicolas Lupica and Jon Horner 8-0 at No. 3.
U of L swept the singles as Conley defeated Ormaza 7-6, 6-2 at No. 1 and Paulo Carvalho beat Lisac 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 at No. 2. Nicodim claimed the No. 3 spot with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Franco and Matt Mayer posted a 4-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Bernard at No. 4. Jhonny Berrido defeated Lupica 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 and Harry Walsh beat Homer 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.
"To have an 18-4 record, despite our typically brutal national schedule is a great accomplishment," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We beat a team that has participated in NCAA tournament the past three years, at their place. Our guys rose to occasion by sweeping all singles matches. It was a fantastic team effort and I am very proud. We are gaining momentum going into tournament time. This was an impressive win because Georgia State is an established national program and an NCAA competitor."
The Cardinals will travel to Richmond, Va. to play VCU on April 11 and close out the season with Virginia Tech on April 12.
