No. 17 Virginia Commonwealth Defeats Men's Tennis 5-0

Richmond, Va. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to No. 17 Virginia Commonwealth University 5-0 Saturday afternoon at Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, Va.
The Rams got off to a 1-0 start by winning the doubles point. VCU's No. 3 team of Daniel Casquero and Francesc Lleal started the Rams with an 8-2 win over Louisville?s Sebastian Aspillaga and Jakob Gustafsson. The Rams' No. 1 pair of Florian Marquardt and Pedro Nieto clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over the Cardinals' Cody Conley and Octavian Nicodim.
In singles, 54th-ranked Nieto made it 2-0 in favor of the Rams with a 6-3, 6-2 win over 124th-ranked Paulo Carvalho at the No. 2 slot. The Rams' Mats Norin then made it 3-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Harry Walsh at No. 6. Lleal and Marquardt then each posted straight-set wins, finishing within moments of each other, to make the score 5-0. The remaining two singles matches were suspended.
Virginia Commonwealth improves to 20-3 on the season, while Louisville falls to 18-6. The Cardinals will travel to Milwaukee for the 2003 Conference USA Men's Tennis Championship April 16-19.
