LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Cindy Roberson, sophomore Kelley Bowman and freshman Katie Wilson each claimed individual titles to lead the University of Louisville women's track and field team to a first-place finish at the Cardinal Challenge Saturday at Cardinal Park.
Louisville finished with 129 points, narrowly edging Cincinnati (127) by two points for the team title. Southern Illinois placed third with 118 points, followed by Eastern Kentucky (91), Marquette (71) and Western Kentucky (46). The win marked the third straight year the Cardinals have won the home event.
Roberson won the pole vault after clearing 10 feet, 11.75 inches. Sophomore Jacey Hughes placed second in the event with a height of 10-6.
In the high jump, Bowman won the event with a mark of 5-5, edging junior teammate Mindy Helman for the title. Helman also cleared 5-5, but Bowman was awarded the title because she cleared it on her first try, whereas Helman achieved success on her second attempt.
Wilson won the javelin competition with a throw of 127-6 despite difficult windy conditions. The win was the first for the Grand Forks, N.D., native in her young collegiate career.
Junior Kelly Faber scored in four events on the day. The Carol Stream, Ill., native placed second in the 400-meter hurdles (1:05.03) and fourth in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.69) and high jump (5-1). She also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team to a third-place finish in the day's final event.
