Women's Tennis Edged by Cincinnati

CINCINNATI -- The University of Louisville's women's tennis team was edged 4-3 in a hard-fought Conference USA tilt against rival Cincinnati at Sawyer Courts. The loss snapped a six match winnign streak.
Louisville posts a 17-6 record with the Bearcats evening their season mark to 9-9.
"It was an extremely tough match," said Greg Davis, U of L head coach. "Our doubles achilles heel hurt us. We had eight match points and couldn't quite finish them off."
Both teams battled for the doubles point to build momentum. Julie Penn and Melisa San Martin captured No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Jen Capuzzi and Cristina Reyes.
"Penn and San Martin stepped up and played the best doubles tennis they have all year," said Davis.
In the deciding doubles match, UC's Julie Klauck and Samantha Liu trailed Paige Eber and Jasmin Singh 7-4. After fighting off three match points, the Bearcats evened the match and forced the tie-breaker at 8-8. The Cardinals jumped ahead 6-3 in the tiebreaker but U of L allowed UC to score five unanswered points.
"Penn and San Martin stepped up and played the best doubles tennis they have all year," said Davis.
Meanwhile at No. 1, Cincinnati's Khushchehr Italia and Lyndsey Molony nipped Marie Louise Frolich Hansen and Kelly Taylor 8-6, who have been formidable as a pair at No. 1 all year for the Cardinals.
The Cardinals fared better in the singles with Frolich-Hansen , Taylor and San Martin each notching wins.
