HOUSTON, Texas - Senior Cindy Roberson edged sophomore teammate Jacey Hughes to win the pole vault during day one action of the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday in Houston.
The Cardinals currently stand in sixth place with 26 points. Host Houston leads the close 12-team competition with 43.5 points, followed by South Florida (43), Marquette (35), Tulane (27) and Cincinnati (27).
Roberson and Hughes both set the U of L indoor record by clearing 12 feet, one and a half inches, becoming the first two women to eclipse 12 feet indoors in school history. Roberson was awarded the individual title because it took her fewer attempts to clear the mark. The pole vault championship is the first-ever by a Cardinal woman.
Senior Brittany Hedgepeth placed fourth in the long for the second straight year. The Benton Harbor, Mich., native recorded a season-best jump of 18-4.25.
In the 60-meter dash, senior Alanna Mestelle advanced to today's finals with a time of 7.64 in the preliminary heats. The time equaled the second fastest in U of L history.
Junior Mindy Helman broke the school record in the pentathlon after tallying a ninth-place score of 3,083 points, shattering the previous record of 2,395 points set by Kelli Chaffin in 1995. This is the first year C-USA has held competition in the event.
Freshman Emily Kost recorded a personal-best throw of 49-6.5 to place sixth in the weight throw to round out the Cardinal scorers in day one.
The C-USA Indoor Championships concludes today.
