Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville's men soccer defeated Ohio State 1-0 Wednesday evening in Cardinal Park. The Cards improve to 7-5 on the season and the Buckeyes fall to 2-8-2.
"It was a hard fought battle," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "I have to give Ohio State a lot of credit, defensively they made it very difficult for us tonight. They are extremely well coached and have a lot of discipline.
"After Simon scored the goal, I saw a sparkle back in our game. We have been lacking confidence after the road losses and it was good to see them bounce back and play with confidence. Hopefully we can build on this win."
Senior Simon Bird scored the game winner in the 76th minute off a Matt Rose corner kick. The Buckeye defense left Bird alone outside the box and he blasted the ball in for his eighth goal of the season.
Cardinal keeper David Gisler collected three saves and registered his first shutout while the Buckeye's Ray Burse, Jr. collected two on the evening. The Buckeyes held a 6-4 corner kick advantage over the Cardinals.
Louisville will return to league play as they host East Carolina Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7:00 p.m. in Cardinal Park.
