
Women Finish Fifth at Conference USA Track & Field Championships

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's track and field team finished fifth overall at the Conference USA Outdoor Championship Saturday at Cardinal Park.
The Cardinals tallied 64 points during the three-day event to equal the program's highest finish since joining C-USA. U of L has placed fifth four times. Houston finished with 144 points to win the championship for the third time in seven years. Marquette was second with 119 points, followed by South Florida (85.5), TCU (65) and Louisville.
Leading the way for the Cardinals was senior Alicia Cavender, who pulled away from the field on the final lap to win the 1500m with a personal-best time of 4:30.83. Cavender ran the first three and a half laps in the fourth and fifth positions before making her move on the third turn of the final lap and finishing 30 meters ahead of Angie Kist of Cincinnati. The Piqua, Ohio, native also finished sixth in the 800m with a time of 2:10.97.
In the 400m hurdles, senior Nicole Cottmon set a school record with a time of 1:00.65 to finish third. Houston's Alicia Cave won the race with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 58.77.
The 4x100m relay team of juniors Brittany Hedgepeth, Marian McDonald, Alanna Mestelle and Lissette Shannon set a school record with a time of 46.31 to finish eighth.
Senior Shola Kadiri recorded a throw of 46 feet, two inches to finish third in the shot put, while teammate Trish Young had a personal-best toss of 44-9.75 to place eighth.
For the three-day event, a total of 15 meet records were set; nine by the women and six by the men.
