LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's track and field squad captured seven events to win the Cardinal Challenge Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Park Track Stadium.
The Cardinals tallied 190 points to win the event for the second straight year. Cincinnati placed second with 166 points, followed by Marquette (153), Eastern Kentucky (97) and Western Kentucky (51).
Senior Alicia Cavender led the way for the Cardinals with a win in the 1500m after running a personal-best time of 4:31.35. She also placed second in the 800m (2:17.38) and helped the 4x400m relay squad to a third-place finish.
Louisville's other six wins came in the field events. Junior Brittany Hedgepeth won the long jump with a distance of 17 feet, nine inches, nearly one foot longer than the runner-up finisher. Senior Dalela Ivory captured the triple jump with a leap of 36-5.
The freshman tandem of Kelley Bowman and Jacey Hughes each won their respective specialties. Bowman cleared 5-6 to win the high jump, while Hughes won the pole vault with a height of 11-6.
Senior Shola Kadiri continued her dominance in the shot put as she won with a throw of 45-1.5. The school recordholder remained perfect at home in the event, adding to her two wins achieved last year.
The Cards' final win came in the javelin. Senior Trish Young claimed the top spot with a mark of 144-9, more than 30 feet ahead of the second-place finisher.
Junior Marea Ingwersen set a school record in the 3000m steeplechase with a second-place time of 11:22.13, bettering the previous record by nearly 30 seconds.
Also recording second-place finishes for the Cardinals were juniors Marian McDonald (100m and 200m), Lesley Drury (high jump) and Cindy Roberson (pole vault) and freshman Heather Griffith (5000m).
"This was a great meet for us," said U of L head coach Warren Bye. "We had a lot of strong performances today. We just need to continue to work hard and improve as we prepare for next month's conference meet."
