LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- After winning the doubles point, the University of Louisville women's tennis team had to wait until the end of a three-hour, three-set singles match to await its fate. The Cardinals ended up being edged by Butler 4-3 when No. 1 singles player Melisa San Martin lost a heartbreaking 2-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4) marathon match against Amy Steiner.
"This was a well-played match against one of the best Butler squads ever," said U of L head coach Meg Peavy. "Melissa played a great match, losing in a three-hour battle."
U of L's doubles play continues to improve with Julie Penn and Paige Eber withstood a 9-7 challenge from the No. 2 doubles team of Mindy Champion and Steiner. The No. 3 doubles team of Mariana Torres and Kelly Taylor have been the bright spot of the dual season with a 8-2 win over Laurel Clements and Annie Gantz.
"We had opportunities and the breaks didn't go our way, said Peavy. "I am so pleased to see the gritty improvement we continue to show. We are digging in for the final seven match run coming down the stretch
