LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - University of Louisville softball coach Sandy Pearsall has announced that four student athletes: Kady Garrick, Candi Hicks, Courtney Moore and Audrey Rendon, have signed National Letters-of-Intent to continue their careers at the University of Louisville in the fall of 2003.
"This is a solid recruiting class in a year when we have to replace five strong seniors who have been the base of our young program," said Pearsall. "This group will make an immediate impact on our team, bringing speed, power and pitching. All four of them will help us get to the next level."
Garrick, a senior at Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Ariz., is a right-handed pitcher. She posted 19 shutouts and 284 strikeouts and was named Most Valuable Player in 2001. She was also the Tucson Citizen newspaper's Player of the Year, and earned All-Southern Arizona first team honors. In 2002, she was named to the Arizona All-State first team. Garrick plays for the Firecracker Gold, one of the top 10 U-18 club teams in the nation.
"We look forward to Kady's style of pitching," said Pearsall. "She's a bulldog on the mound who uses finesse to win games. She will definitely be an impact player for us."
Hicks, is a middle infielder out of Buchholz High School in Gainesville, Fla. In 2002, she was named Outstanding Offensive Player and earned All-State first team honors while playing on the Florida State runner-up team. She batted .367 for the season and had 22 stolen bases.
"Candi possesses speed, the power to hit the ball out of the park and the ability to play three positions well," said Pearsall. "Her aggressive style of play will fit in nicely with our team."
Moore, a senior at Golden West High School in Visalia, Calif., is a middle infielder. She earned All-American honors and was named to the All-Valley and All-league first teams in 2002. She played on the Fresno Force club team which finished fourth in nationals. In addition to her softball accolades, Moore was also named Most Valuable Offensive Player in soccer and earned All-League first team honors.
"Courtney plays all-out on defense. She can come up with a big play and will turn around and be an offensive threat to drive in runs," said Pearsall. "Her great athletic ability will help her go far in the college game."
Rendon, a senior at Pueblo Central High School in Pueblo, Colo., is a middle infielder and slap hitter. She batted .428 for the season and stole 25 bases. Rendon was named to the All-South Central League and participated in the All-State Softball game.
"Audrey may be small in stature, but she can make big plays," said Pearsall. "She has great speed and will add to our slapping depth. She will also contribute with her ability to play multiple infield positions."
The University of Louisville softball team will open the 2003 season at the Chevron Paradise Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, Feb. 6-19.
