Cardinal Career Planner

1st Year: Exploration
- Use the DISCOVER software package to identify and explore career goals. (Available at no charge at the University Career Center and the North & South Computer Centers...bring a 3.5" computer disk to save your results.)
- Visit the University Career Center in the SAC Building to research careers and find out about career assessment tools.
- Identify personal interests, skills, and values using assessment tools available at the University Career Center...ask a counselor for assistance.
- Discuss academic and career goals with your academic counselor.
- Visit some of our recommended web sites.
- Consult your academic counselor to ensure you are taking any necessary prerequisites for your major preference.
- Volunteer for CardsCARE community service opportunities.
- Speak with family members, employers and faculty to discuss career interests.
- Participate in Cardinal Life Skills Career Month (October).
2nd Year: Investigation
- Review, revise and reaffirm your interests, skills, and values.
- Develop a resume at the University Career Center and continue career exploration related to your major and field(s) of interest.
- Get involved in Recognized Student Organizations on campus related to your major and field(s) of interest.
- Volunteer for CardsCARE community service opportunities.
- Meet with your academic counselor to select a major and apply to an academic department.
- Register with the CARDS Program at the University Career Center.
- Sign up for the Shadows Program through your team's athletic department career counselor...must sign up for at least one session during either the Fall or Spring Semester.
- Participate in Cardinal Life Skills Career Month (October).
3rd Year: Focus
- Meet with your academic counselor to discuss degree plan as required by your major/college.
- Consider job search strategies: a practicum, independent study, internship, CardsCARE volunteer opportunities, and/or summer employment related to your major/field of interest. Find opportunities and apply at the University Career Center or check with your team's athletic department career counselor.
- Take a leadership role in a campus Recognized Student Organization.
- Attend the following career workshops:

- Complete your resume/cover letter.
- Sign up for mock interview.
- Participate in at least one Shadows Program session during either the Fall or Spring Semester...sign up with Alison Bass.
- Consider post-grad options: professional school, employment, etc.
- Plan to take the appropriate graduate entrance exams if you wish to pursue postgraduate education (GRE, MCAT, LSAT, GMAT, MAT, etc.).
- If you are planning on attending graduate school, begin compiling a list of institutions that have a program that fits your needs.
- Attend university career and job fairs.
- Begin networking: meet professionals, faculty, and former teammates in your field(s) of interest.
- Participate in Cardinal Life Skills Career Month (October).
4th & 5th Year: Realization
- Sign-up for Life After Sports Program.
- Participate in at least one Shadows Program session during either the Fall or Spring Semester...sign up with Alison Bass.
- Finalize your resume/cover letter and submit a copy to Alison Bass for inclusion in the UofL Corporate Playbook. Also submit your resume with the University Career Center.
- Obtain, complete, and submit all necessary graduate school application materials if you plan to pursue graduate education. Deadline for turning in all completed materials (including but not limited to test scores and application fees) is no later than 30 days before the first day of classes of the semester in which you plan to enroll.
- Take the necessary graduate school entrance exams.
- Apply for grants, scholarships, and other financial aid for which you are eligible to help reduce the cover the cost of graduate school expenses (see you team's academic counselor for more information).
- Attend Cardinal Career Night to network with employers and learn vital job placement skills during breakout sessions.
- Attend university career and job fairs.
- Volunteer for CardsCARE community service opportunities.
