Field Hockey Overpowers Virginia Commonwealth

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Virginia Commonwealth 6-2 Saturday at Trager Stadium.
The Cards jumped out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half when junior Pip Sanders scored an unassisted goal. Freshman Olivia Netzler connected on a cross from junior Joanie Frame five minutes later to put Louisville up 2-0.
VCU struck back on Tavris Parker's unassisted goal with 10:45 remaining in the half to pull the Rams within one.
Frame gave the Cards a 3-1 halftime cushion when she scored on an assist from freshman Kim Hughes with 7:37 left in the half.
In the second half, junior Danielle Barr connected on a Louisville penalty corner to give the Cardinals a 4-1 lead. Sanders and Netzler assisted on the goal.
Netzler added her second goal of the game four minutes later, this time on an assist from Barr. Junior Jen Welgosh completed the Louisville scoring attack with an unassisted goal at the 18:32 mark.
The Rams' Lauren Sparrow nailed a pass from Emily Smith to make the score 6-2 with 9:28 remaining in the game.
Netzler finished the game with two goals and an assist. Louisville goalkeeper sophomore Christy Hershey finished the game with three saves. She allowed one goal in 55:35 minutes played. VCU goalkeeper Abby Stiles had 13 stops in the game and allowed six goals.
Louisville (3-1) will play Duke (4-0) Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trager Stadium. The Blue Devils, ranked No. 9 in the HockeyPoint! coaches poll, defeated No.6 Michigan State (3-2) in the second game of the day on Saturday. Michigan State and VCU (1-3) will face off at noon on Sunday.

The Blue Devils broke a scoreless tie with 6:35 remaining in the first half when Gracie Sorbello connected on a pass from Johanna Bischof to put Duke up 1-0.
Duke goalkeeper Hallie Smith got the shutout and recorded three saves. Michigan State goalkeeper Lauren Hess allowed one goal and made five stops for the Spartans.
