CardsCARE Volunteer Opportunities - TOPSoccer
August 07, 2001 | General
The University of Louisville Men's Soccer team has a close relationship with TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer). TOPSoccer is a community-based training and team placement program for young athletes with disabilities, organized by youth soccer association volunteers. The program is designed to bring the opportunity of learning and playing soccer to any boy or girl, age 8-19, who has a mental or physical disability. The goal is to enable the thousands of young athletes with disabilities to become valued and successful members of the US YOUTH SOCCER family.
There are thousands of children with disabilities who need, and can be provided with, the opportunity to play soccer through the TOPSoccer program. Perry Alexander, Kentucky's youth soccer president, said it well in a letter of thanks by stating: "...the men's soccer team (at U of L) provided a crucial but almost impossible-to-find component - the opportunity to socialize with 'regular' people who accept the children for who they are at this very moment...The experiences at practice were priceless for all involved. The children now feel like they have 21 big brothers and some very special coaches...I want to thank the University of Louisville and its Athletic Department for first, creating the CardsCARE program, and secondly, for finding such quality student and faculty personnel and allowing them the opportunity to make a difference in the greater community. You all deserve a big pat on the back and our warmest thanks for a job more than well done..."
