CardsCARE Volunteer Opportunities - St. Joseph Children's Home
August 07, 2001 | General
By recognizing the grave need to care for children left orphaned by the cholera epidemic, St. Joseph Children's Home was founded in 1849. Today's dependent child is no longer a victim of epidemic or war, but of family crisis, financial difficulty or an abusive neglectful environment. In response to changing societal conditions, St. Joseph has evolved from an orphanage to that of a more diversified child caring facility. Over the past 152 years they have served thousands of children. Today St. Joe's serves over 250 children on a daily basis. Their programs include:
- Residential Treatment Home
- Child Development Center
- Foster and Adoptive Care
- Preservation Services
The University of Louisville Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving teams have proudly adopted St. Joseph Children's Home as their charity. The student-athletes enjoy visiting St. Joe's because it gives them a chance to get involved in various recreational activities such as basketball, Frisbee, kickball, etc. It also gives the children an opportunity to interact with the student-athletes by simply having someone with whom to talk or play board games.
