CardsCARE Volunteer Opportunities - Kosair Children's Hospital
August 07, 2001 | General
Kosair Children's Hospital is the only free-standing, full-service hospital in the state of Kentucky "Just for Kids." The hospital is dedicated to a simple mission: providing the best medical care possible to the children of Kentucky and southern Indiana.
Going to a hospital can be an overwhelming experience for a child. A hospital seems big and scary, and the child does not know what will happen. The doctors and nurses at Kosair Children's Hospital do all they can to ease the mind of an apprehensive child. It is touching to see the effect that you, a University of Louisville student-athlete, can have on an ill child. Stephen P. Wright, Medical Director of Kosair Children's Hospital, wrote a letter to U of L Director of Athletics Tom Jurich commenting on the Women's Basketball team's weekly visits stating, "...The basketball players may not fully appreciate the impact they have on our patients but when I see pain turned into comfort and tears turned to joy, I know that their efforts are worth every minute. Their dedication to bring a little joy to our sick, helpless and dying children takes courage far beyond what most people possess."
Anyone who plans to volunteer on a regular basis must first go through a brief orientation and get a painless PPD skin test. If you would like to make a difference in the life of a child by volunteering at Kosair, or for more information, please contact:
