LOUISVILLE - Behind the strong pitching of Conference USA Most Valuable Player Felicia Gonzales, Southern Miss (45-19) claimed its second straight C-USA Tournament championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 13 DePaul (50-14-1) Saturday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. With the victory, USM gains Conference USA's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Southern Miss scored both of its runs in the fourth inning, as Kenya Peters was hit by a pitch, and Chanikka Gant followed with a single. Melanie Hymel was inserted as a pinch runner for Peters, and after Heather Bell struck out, Sarah Boyd hit a two-run double to score the game's only runs.
Gonzales and DePaul's Lindsay Chouinard showed why they are two of the league's top pitchers. Gonzales tossed a four-hit shutout, walking two and striking out six. Chouinard allowed five hits over six innings and struck out 12 Golden Eagles.
