LOUISVILLE - Southern Miss rightfielder Sarah Boyd's RBI single in the fourth inning proved to be decisive, as the second-seeded Golden Eagles (44-18) downed third-seeded South Florida (40-31), 1-0 at the Conference USA Tournament, presented by U of L Health Care on Friday morning at Ulmer Stadium. Southern Miss will play the winner of the Louisville-DePaul game Friday night at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals and Blue Demons play at 12 p.m. today. USM catcher Kenya Peters was hit by a pitch to open the Golden Eagles' half of the fourth inning and moved to second base when Channika Gant grounded out. Heather Bell followed with a single, moving Peters to third. Boyd then drove her home with what proved to be the gamewinner.
South Florida managed just three hits off C-USA Pitcher of the Year Felicia Gonzales, who upped her record to 27-9 on the season. Gonzales struck out 10 and walked one. The Bulls' Jessi Kowal dropped to 21-12 on the season despite allowing just four hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings.
