LOUISVILLE - Rightfielder Shavaughne Desecki went 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI to lead top-seeded DePaul (48-13-1) to an 8-0 victory over eighth-seeded Charlotte in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament, presented by U of L Health Care Thursday afternoon at Ulmer Stadium. The No. 13 Blue Demons meet the winner of the Houston-Louisville game on Friday at 2 p.m. The 49ers (16-32) will face the loser of the Houston-Louisville matchup tonight at 8:30.
DePaul coach Eugene Lenti was not surprised by his first team all-league outfielder's performance.
"Shavaughne led the way. She hit the ball hard and showed why she is the best hitter on the team and one of the best in the country," he said.
The Blue Demons tallied five runs in the first three innings and never really looked back. Desecki opened the scoring with an RBI double to right field and later scored on a single by Sarah Douglas. DePaul added another run in the second and two more in the third when Tatum Allen doubled to left to score Molly Sircher, and Sarah Martz added a fielder's choice RBI.
Charlotte managed six hits off Martz but also stranded six runners on base, which is a point of concern for 49er coach Aimee DeVos.
"We batted well today but just couldn't score any runs," she said. "DePaul had a lot of hits and took advantage of those hits."
Charlotte third baseman Leah Heston was her club's top offensive performer, going 2-for-3. Second baseman Denise Atmar added a double.
