Charlotte Advances Past Houston, 9-6

LOUISVILLE - Third baseman Leah Heston went 3-for-4 to lead a 14-hit Charlotte attack as the eighth-seeded 49ers (17-32) eliminated fifth-seeded Houston (22-33) from the Conference USA Tournament, presented by U of L Health Care late Thursday night at Ulmer Stadium. With the victory, Charlotte meets the loser of the DePaul-Louisville game at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. (DePaul and Louisville are slated to play at 12 p.m.
Trailing 3-1, Charlotte scored four runs in the top of the fourth to hold on for the win. Rightfielder Vikki Van Dam had an RBI single, and shortstop Nora Petrie had a two-out, two-run single. Betsy Thompson went the distance for the win, striking out six.
Houston pounded out 14 hits as well, and each team stranded eight baserunners. Second baseman Leslie Seay, leftfielder Riane Netardus and shortstop Ali McDougall each had three hits apiece for the Cougars. Jamie Falco took the loss in relief and finishes the season 9-14.
The Conference USA Tournament has six games on tap for Friday: Third-seed South Florida meets second-seed Southern Miss at 10 a.m., followed by top-seed DePaul and fourth-seed Louisville at 12 p.m. The loser of the USF-USM game plays UAB at 2 p.m., and Charlotte squares off against the loser of Louisville-DePaul at 4:30. The South Florida-Southern Miss and DePaul-Louisville winners meet at 6:30, and the winners of the 2:30 and 4:30 games meet at 8:30 p.m.
