Women's Golf Rallies to Second at UNC-Wilmington

WALLACE, N.C. -- The University of Louisville women's golf team rallied to finish second at the the UNCW Lady Seahawk Invitational Tuesday at River Landing Country Club. Charleston Southern captured the team championship and junior Jessica Lewis of James Madison claimed medalist honors.

"I am very pleased with our performance," said U of L head coach Kelly Meyers. "We had excellent balance with four players scoring in the 70s in challenging weather conditions."

For second straight day, the 18 teams battled windy, cold conditions and CSU held on for a four-stroke victory over Louisville and James Madison. The Lady Bucs, who fashioned a 12-stroke lead following Monday's first day of action, finished with a 314-301-318 total. Louisville and JMU carded identical 937 totals, but the Cardinals were awarded second place on the basis of cumulative scores.

The Cardinals were led by senior Katherine Mowat who carded a 76-77-76 (229) which placed her seventh. Cindy Pasechnik shot a 79, 80, 77 (236) to tie for 19th.

Lewis, meanwhile, stood fifth after the first day, but rallied for a four-under-par 68 on Tuesday to post a three-stroke victory over Charleston Southern's Kari Hilton. Lewis fashioned a 79-71-69=218 and Hilton had a 72-73-76 (221) over the Par 72, 5,990-yard layout. UNC Wilmington freshman Courtney Pomeranz came in third at 76-73-74 (223).

Overall, the tournament featured three eagles - all on the first day - and 236 birdies by the 93 entrants.
