St. Louis, Mo. - University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Saint Louis 61-44 in Bauman-Eberhardt Arena. The win secures the No. 1 seed in the Conference USA Tournament and at least a tie for the regular season title. The Cards improve to 18-7 overall and 13-1 in conference play. Louisville also extended its win streak to 11 with the victory.
Junior guard Marju Sober led the Cards with 17 points and Sara Nord added 10 assists. Shamika Ingram led the Cards on the boards with seven rebounds and added 14 points. Rounding out the top scorers are Kara Kessans with 11 and Janelle Antoine with 10.
The Cards got off to a slow start in the first half, trailing by six with 14:47 in the half. Louisville took the lead at the 6:05 mark off a jumper by Sober. The Billikens regained the lead until the 3:44 mark. Nord stole the ball and dished to Kessans on the fastbreak to go up 26-25 and never relinquished the lead.
Louisville took control in the second half, pounding it in the paint. The closest the Billikens got was six with 12:58 remaining but back-to-back Cardinal baskets squashed any hopes of a Billiken upset.
"I was very proud of our defensive effort in the first half," said head coach Martin Clapp. "I thought defensively we matched up better and didn't give them many second chance opportunities."
The Cards will travel to Charlotte to take on the 49ers on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
