Women's Tennis Competes in South Carolina Invitational

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of Louisville women's tennis team competed in the 2001 Lady Gamecock Classic Oct. 5-7. The tournament featured players from the University of South Carolina, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Greensboro, Georgia Tech and College of Charleston.
Sophomore Paige Eber went three sets, but fell to College of Charleston's Emily Scatuorchio 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the first round of the "B" draw. She then lost to Heather McCrae in the consolation brackets.
Also playing in "B" singles, Louisville junior Kelly Kiehna lost to College of Charleston's Maria Valkenhoff 6-4, 6-0. Dropping to the back draw, she fell in three sets to UNC-Greensboro's Laura Peel 6-0, 5-7, 6-3.
Sophomore Mariana Torres lost to Georgia Tech's Kelly Roberson in the first round of the "C" draw. In the consolation bracket, Torres defeated UNC-Wilmington's Carolina Wyeth 6-2, 6-1. She then defeated UNC-Wilmington's Jennifer Gibbons 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Jessica Sole of UNC-Wilmington 6-2, 6-2 for a ninth place finish in the "C" singles division.
In doubles action, Paige Eber and Mariana Torres lost to College of Charleston's Magory and Camargo 8-4 and then fell to UNC-Wilmington's Barnett and Bowles 8-6.
Kiehna teamed with Georgia Tech's Kelly Miller to defeat UNC-Wilmington's Gibbon and Sole 8-6 in the first round of the "C" doubles draw. They fell to South Carolina's Markovski and Wojdyto 8-2 in the second round.
The Cardinals will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to compete in the Middle Tennessee Ivitational Oct. 12.
