BOSTON, Mass. - The University of Louisville rowing team won a medal with a fourth-place finish in the Club 8+ race Saturday at the Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest two-day rowing event in the world.
The medal, which was awarded to the top five crews, is the first-ever for U of L at the prestigious event and guarantees the Cards an entry in the race next year.
The Cardinals finished the three-mile course with a time of 17:46.43, just one second behind the third-place crew. Tennessee won the 55-boat race with a time of 17:31.82.
Members of the crew were juniors Lucy Svehla, Blaire Steinert and Melissa Campbell, sophomores Allison Kemphaus, Carmen Noltemeyer and Stephanie George, and freshmen twins Ashley Spence and Brooke Spence. The coxswain was junior Jennifer Klipple.
"The team worked extremely hard today," said head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The women are excited to win a medal at such an incredible regatta and they are all looking forward to building on the success we experienced here and carrying it with us the rest of the fall and into the spring."
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Elkhart, Ind., for the Head of the Elk Regatta.
