Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's soccer team handed out its second straight shutout tonight, defeating Xavier 5-0 in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals improve to 3-2 on the season.
Louisville controlled the game from the first kick. Freshman standout Nathan Stevens scored Louisville's first goal at the 3:51 mark. Stevens dribbled in hitting the left back of the goal.
Then junior transfer Sean Murphy scored at the 9:33 mark, hitting the middle back of the net. In the 11th minute, senior Stuart Langrish scored off a cross from George Zabaneh.
Late in the first period, sophomore TJ Newberg scored in the 35th minute. Louisville outshot Xavier 8-4 in the first period.
In the second period, the Cardinals controlled the game, scoring in the 75th minute. Stevens added his second goal of the game off a cross from Shawn Faria that hit the middle back of the net.
Louisville goalkeeper Jeremy Morales collected two saves in the second period for his third shutout of the season. Tonight's shutout gives Morales the career shutout record.
"I am pleasantly surprised by this team," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "This is the first Louisville team that is very attack-minded. We keep pressing the opponent all the time.
"We defended very well tonight. Morales proved to be one of the top goalkeepers in Conference USA. We are looking forward to Friday night's game against Akron."
The Cardinals will kick off the Louisville Soccer Classic Friday night against No. 19 Akron at 7:30 in Cardinal Park.
