Mitchell Named Associate AD For Academics

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Marvin Mitchell, who joined the University of Louisville Athletics staff in November of 1999 to oversee the Cardinals' Academic Services for its student-athletes, has been elevated to Associate Athletic Director for Academic Services.
Mitchell, 31, becomes the school's first Associate Athletics Director in the area of academics. Academic Services fell under the direction of the athletic department in 1999. It had previously been administered by the university's Office of Student Affairs and funded by the U of L Athletic Association.
"Marvin has done a tremendous job and demonstrated a great vision for our future in the short time he has been here," said U of L Director of Athletics Tom Jurich. "He is a man of high integrity and I have been very pleased with his goals, objectives and the direction he has given to our program to aid the academic achievement of our student-athletes. As a former student-athlete himself, he understands and relates well to our student-athletes."
A towering former collegiate defensive lineman, Mitchell joined the U of L Athletics staff as the Cards' Director of Academic Services in 1999 after three years in a similar capacity at East Carolina. Prior to his stint at East Carolina, Mitchell worked five years at his alma mater Wake Forest in many roles, including serving as assistant director of academic services for the Demon Deacons from 1994-96.
A four-year letterman on the defensive line at Wake Forest (1987-91), Mitchell is an accomplished speaker and has delivered presentations at the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics national convention. He is an active member in the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Program and the National Consortium for Academics and Sport.
A native of Eastville, Va., Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in speech communications at Wake Forest in 1992 and a master's degree in counseling education there in 1995. He is single.
