LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of South Florida extended its winning streak to 14 games with a pair of wins over the University of Louisville in Conference USA softball action Saturday at Ulmer Stadium.
The wins didn't come easily, however, as the Bulls squeaked by 2-1 in the first game with Louisville scoring in the bottom of the seventh to threaten. The second game went 15 innings before South Florida scratched out a run in the top of the 15th in the longest game in C-USA history.
"We played gutty ball against a team who has been playing together for two or three years," said Sandy Pearsall, U of L head coach. "It takes a little experience to play in that situation and pressure and come up with a win."
In the first game, pitcher Jessica Rak gave up just three hits and two runs, only one of which was earned to take the loss. Centerfielder Coleen Coughlin and designated hitter Christina Soto each went 2-for-3 to lead the Cardinals.
In the second game, both teams scored in the third inning. The Bulls scored when Alanna Hazzard scored on a RBI double by Lea Mishlan. The Cardinals answered in the bottom of the third when Melissa Jacobo smacked a solo home run to tie.
The game then went 12 more innings before another run crossed the plate. After Tracy Hammett singled, she scored on a double by Courtney Lewellen.
Jaime Anderson notched the win with Jessi Kowal picking up her fourth save. After pitching 12 innings and striking out nine, Mandy Rockwell got a no decision. Rak took the loss to drop her record to 12-10.
