BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Louisville pinch runner Christina Soto scored the winning run from third base in the top of the seventh inning on a throwing error by UAB shortstop Kelly Lamb as the Cardinals (23-10, 3-0 C- USA) completed a three-game sweep of the Blazers (12-23, 0-3) in Conference USA softball action Sunday afternoon at George Ward Park.
With the game tied 2-2 entering the top of the seventh, Louisville third baseman Melissa Jacobo led off with a single and was replaced on first base by Soto. First baseman Amy Pickering followed with a single that advanced Soto to second, and designated player Kim Hilpp advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, left fielder Candi Padilla, hit a ground ball to third which UAB's Lamb fielded cleanly but threw over the head of first baseman Jessica Smith, allowing Soto to score.
Louisville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as right fielder Keola Calderon singled and then scored as UAB centerfielder Cliffanie Engram misplayed a single by Jacobo.
Engram would redeem herself in the fourth inning, giving UAB a 2-1 lead with a two-run homer that also scored right fielder Jennifer Polsteen.
Louisville starter Tara McClure (10-3), who pitched a two-hit shutout vs. UAB on Saturday, went the distance again Sunday, allowing two runs on three hits, walking two and striking out nine.
UAB's Kerri Foster (8-13) started, left, then reentered the game and was pitching during the decisive seventh inning. Foster worked five and two thirds innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.
