LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Centerfielder Coleen Coughlin went 3-for-4 and scored a run to lead the University of Louisville to a 2-0 shutout of South Florida in Conference USA softball action Sunday at Ulmer Stadium.
The Cardinals (26-21), now 4-7 in C-USA, handed South Florida (37-23) its first conference loss in 12 games. The loss also snaps a 14-game winning streak for USF.
Both teams were held scoreless until Louisville put the first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. Melissa Jacobo led off with a single and then scored with two outs on a single by Nicole Sparks.
"We had a lot of energy and played sharp defense today," said head coach Sandy Pearsall. "Our hitters were seeing the ball well today."
In all, U of L scattered 10 hits including a double by Jacobo. Cardinal pitcher Jessica Rak (13-10) earned the win after going the distance and allowing just five hits.
Louisville scored an insurance run in the fifth when Coughlin led off the inning with a single and scored on an RBI single by first baseman Keola Calderon.
