ST. LOUIS - Mandy Rockwell held Saint Louis to three hits and retired the final 10 Billiken batters as Louisville posted a 2-0 win in the nightcap and escaped with a split in the Conference USA softball doubleheader Saturday in St. Louis. The Cards dropped the first game 3-2 on a suicide squeeze in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In game two, Louisville scored a run in the fourth when Lisa McMillan singled to drive in Melissa Jacobo for the only run U of L would need. The Cardinals added an insurance run in the seventh when Amy Pickering singled and came around to score on an RBI groundout by Christina Soto.
In the first game, Saint Louis scored the game-winner on a wild suicide squeeze. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Meredith Henry bunted the ball, but instead of the softball skidding down the line, the ball popped over a charging Louisville infield and landed between the pitching circle and second base. Bett Puttcamp sprinted home from third base as the Billikens posted the 3-2 victory.
The Cardinals (34-24, 8-8 in C-USA) and the Billikens (9-41, 3-14 in C-USA) return to action Sunday when the teams play a single game at 1 p.m.
