LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Louisville ended its home schedule in its inaugural year with a split with Tennessee Tech Thursday at Ulmer Stadium.
Louisville lost 2-1 in the first game and went extra innings to win the second game 6-5. The Cardinals improved their record to 33-23. Tennessee Tech falls to 37-31.
In the first game, Tennessee Tech's LeeAnne Mongar homered in the second inning to go up 1-0. The Cards tied the game in the fourth when Amy Pickering scored on a single by Nicole Sparks. TTU got the winning run in the sixth when Amy Pritchard scored on a Holly Speiser single.
"We had a good outing, we had our chances but couldn't push that last run across," said head coach Sandy Pearsall.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the final inning but Tennessee Tech pitcher Brandy Henry was able to hold on for her 27th win of the season.
In the second game, Louisville had a 4-2 lead going into the final inning when Cardinal reliever Mandy Rockwell tired and TTU put up three runs to tie the game. Using the international tiebreaker rules, TTU started the extra inning with a runner on second but could not advance her. The Cardinals started with Amy Pickering on second base. Catcher Lisa McMillan bunted her to third and then with one out, Nicole Sparks had an RBI single for the winning run.
Rak, who took the loss in the first game, came in to relieve Rockwell and ended up getting the win in the second game to improve her record to 16-12. Louisville was led by Sparks who went five for seven with four RBI. TTU was led by Mongar, who homered twice as part of her four for seven, four RBI outing.
Louisville finishes out its conference season this weekend at Saint Louis.
