Softball Splits At IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS - The University of Louisville softball team lost to IUPUI 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader and won the second 8-2 at Indianapolis on Tuesday.
In the first game, IUPUI's Lacy Query walked to reach first, moved to second on a Louisville error and scored the only run of the game on another Cardinal error in the fifth inning. Louisville pitcher Jessica Rak (15-11) took the loss, allowing one unearned run on three hits and striking out four in six innings.
Offensively, Lisa McMillan went two for three for the Cards.
IUPUI pitcher Christine Lansdown (5-9) got the complete game shut out, allowing six hits.
In the second game, Louisville jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Coleen Coughlin reached after being hit by a pitch, stole second and third and scored on Keola Calderon's triple. Calderon scored on Melissa Jacobo's triple and Jacobo crossed the plate on Candi Padilla's double.
Louisville added two more runs in the second when Coughlin reached first on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Val Smith's single and scored on Calderon's double. Smith scored on Amy Pickering's fielder's choice to give U of L a 5-0 lead.
U of L added another insurance run in the fourth inning when Coughlin led off with a single, stole second and scored on an IUPUI error to make the score 6-0.
Two more Cards crossed the plate in the seventh when Nicole Sparks and Coughlin scored on Smith's two-run double to give Louisville an 8-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
IUPUI led off the seventh with four singles, scoring two runs, but ended the inning on a double play, stranding two for a final score of 8-2.
Louisville starter Mandy Rockwell (5-4) got the win after pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four.
IUPUI's Megan Fultz (7-7) took the loss, throwing a complete game and giving up eight runs on 12 hits.
Offensively for the Cards, Val Smith went three for five with two RBI and a run scored. Sparks went two for three with a run scored. Calderon went two for four with a double, a triple, two RBI and a run scored and Coughlin finished one for three with four runs scored and three stolen bases.
Louisville (30-22) will travel to Morehead for a 3:00 game on May 3. The Cards return home on May 4 when they play their home finale against Tennessee Tech at 4:00 at Ulmer Stadium.
