HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisville advanced to the Conference USA Softball Tournament consolation semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Saint Louis. The Cardinals improved to 36-25 overall as they prepare to face the winner of the DePaul-UAB consolation quarterfinal Friday at 9 p.m. EDT. The DePaul-UAB game began at 4 p.m. EDT.
Louisville's pitching depth has paid dividends throughout the tournament, as Mandy Rockwell recorded a four-hit shutout to improve to 8-4 on the season. Coach Sandy Pearsall is well aware how valuable this depth is during a tournament.
"We had timely hitting, and Mandy had a good outing for us," she said. "She has pitched real well twice against Saint Louis."
Saint Louis coach Jim Molloy credited Rockwell for keeping his team off-balance at the plate.
"It was a tough game to lose," Molloy said. "They played well and made the plays when they had to. We just didn't hit with runners in scoring position."
Amy Pickering went 2-for-3 to lead Louisville's eight hit attack. Lisa McMillan and Nicole Sparks each drove in a run. Beth Yagge went 2-for-3 to lead Saint Louis.
