Softball Tops Towson 4-1 At ECU Tournament

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The University of Louisville defeated Towson University 4-1 on the second day of the East Carolina Tournament.
U of L got on the board in the first inning when Val Smith singled, stole second, advanced to third on Melissa Jacobo's walk and scored on Keola Calderon's base hit. Amy Pickering walked to reach first, advanced to second on Jacobo's walk, moved to third on Calderon's base hit and scored the winning run on Mandy Rockwell's bases-loaded walk.
Towson's run was scored in the second inning when Marisa Moore reached first on a walk and crossed the plate on Brooke Clyde's triple to make the score 2-1.
Kim Hilpp added an insurance run in the fourth when she led off the inning with a walk, moved to second on Lisa McMillan's sacrifice bunt, reached third on a wild pitch and scored on Coleen Coughlin's base hit to give the Cards a 3-1 lead.
Pickering recorded the final run for the Cardinals in the seventh, when she singled to lead off the inning and crossed the plate on Jacobo's double to make the score 4-1.
Louisville starter Rockwell (1-1) pitched seven innings, struck out four and allowed five hits. Pickering went two for two with two runs scored. Smith went two for four with a run scored and a stolen base.
"We are pleased to come out of pool play undefeated," said U of L head Coach Sandy Pearsall. "We've played good defense so far, but we need to turn our offense up a notch. We'll have to come out strong tomorrow and win three games in a row to win the tournament."
