Cardinal Softball Falls To Wisconsin, Defeats San Jose State

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of Louisville softball team lost to Wisconsin 1-0 in the first game of bracket play on Saturday, and defeated San Jose State 2-1 to advance in the consolation bracket of the Sacramento State Capital Softball Tournament.
In the game against Wisconsin, the Badgers scored the only run of the game in the first inning when Lindy Barth singled to center, advanced to second on Anna Jones' walk and scored on a base hit by Chrissy Swartout.
Louisville pitcher Tara McClure (6-3) went six innings and allowed one run on two hits while striking out 10. Christina Soto and Nicole Sparks recorded the only hits for the Cards.
U of L dropped into the consolation bracket, where they defeated San Jose State 2-1.
The Spartans opened up the game by scoring in the first inning. Katie Gomes drew a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Walter and scored on Kara Kanney's base hit to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.
Louisville answered in the bottom of the first when Coleen Coughlin reached first on an error, moved to second on Sparks' sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on Keola Calderon's base hit and scored on an error.
The game remained tied at one until the bottom of the seventh when Kim Hilpp singled to reach first, advanced to second on an error, moved to third on Val Smith's base hit and scored on an error.
Louisville's Jessica Rak (8-4) got the win, going seven innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out four. Hilpp led the Cards offensively, going two for three and scored the winning run.
