Softball Drops Three At Capital Classic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Louisville dropped three games Friday at the Capital Classic in Sacramento, Calif.
The Cards were shutout for only the second time this season when they lost to host Sacramento State 4-0. In that game, the Hornets' winning run was scored in the first inning when Veronica Rodrigues reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Meghan Cunningham and scored on Jennifer Jokinen's base hit. Sacramento State added two insurance runs in the third inning on Jokinen's two-run homer. The final run was scored in the fifth inning when Cunningham reached first after being hit by a pitch, advanced to second, third and scored on errors. Louisville pitcher Mandy Rockwell (2-2) took the loss.
Offensively for the Cards, Melissa Jacobo went 2-for-2, Candi Padilla went 1-for-1 and Rockwell also had a hit.
In the second game, U of L suffered an 8-0 loss to Utah as the Utes capitalized on five Louisville errors to score eight runs, only two of them earned. Utah got on the board with one run in the first and put up a five spot in the second inning, which featured a three-run homer by Sunny Smith and four Cardinal errors. The Utes added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 8-0. Louisville pitcher Tara McClure (6-2) took the loss.
Offensively for the Cards, Keola Calderon went 2-for-3, Coleen Coughlin, Jacobo and Lisa McMillan also got hits.
In the final game of the day, Southeast Missouri weathered a seventh inning rally by the Cards to win 4-3. The Otahkians opened up the game with three runs in the first inning. Louisville came back in the bottom of the first when Coughlin singled to reach first, moved to second on Val Smith's sacrifice bunt and scored on Calderon's double. Calderon then scored on Jacobo's single.
Southeast Missouri scored again in the fourth inning when Kelsey White singled to reach first and scored on Brooke Nett's double to give the Otahkians a 4-2 lead.
Louisville tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh when Kim Hilpp reached first after being hit by a pitch, moved to second when Nicole Sparks drew a walk, advance to third on Coughlin's sacrifice bunt and scored on an error. The Cards were unable to score again and left two on base in the seventh for a final score of 4-3. Louisville pitcher Jessica Rak (7-4) took the loss.
Offensively for the Cards, Val Smith went 2-for-3, Melissa Jacobo went 2-for-4 with an RBI, Coughlin went 1-for-3 with a run scored, Calderon went 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI, Candi Padilla went 1-for-2 and Hilpp went 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Louisville (15-8) will begin bracket play on Saturday against Wisconsin at 12:00 p.m. (EST).
