LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Tricon Cardinal Basketball Hall of Champions, an exhibit area in Freedom Hall dedicated to the rich tradition of University of Louisville Basketball, opened its doors to the public on Feb. 13 preceding the Cardinals' game against Marquette.
Participating in a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony opening the facility were Tom Jurich, U of L Director of Athletics, Denny Crum, U of L Head Basketball Coach, Darrell Griffith, former U of L All-America guard and the 1980 NCAA Player of the Year, and Jonathan Blum, Senior Vice President for Public Affairs at Tricon.
Located in the front, southeast corner of Freedom Hall adjacent to the new Cardinal Athletics Store, the hall will be open weekdays from noon until 5 p.m., during pregame, halftime and postgame of U of L basketball games, and during other major events in Freedom Hall. There is no admission charge.
The area was funded through a $500,000 donation by Tricon, a Louisville-based business which operates Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and KFC restaurants.
Included in the Tricon Cardinal Basketball Hall of Champions are various U of L basketball exhibits, an interactive trivia game, a theatre featuring former Cardinal Basketball greats and past national championship teams, and other U of L memorabilia. It was designed by Murphy and Orr of Atlanta, Ga.
