NEW YORK - University of Louisville All-America guard Jill Morton was drafted in the third round by the Charlotte Sting in the WNBA draft Tuesday. Morton, the 34th overall selection, was Charlotte's third pick of the draft.
Morton led the Lady Cards in scoring this past season, averaging 17.4 points per game.
"I am really excited about being drafted," said Morton. "It is even better that I am going to Charlotte, and it's not too far away. It should be a great experience and I am looking forward to the opportunity."
Morton was named a first team All-America by the Women's Basketball News Service and honorable mention All-America by the Associated Press. The Greensburg, Ind., native led the nation in three-point field goal percentage, hitting 54 percent. She led the team and ranked eighth in the nation in free throw percentage after converting on 88-percent of her shots.
"We are very excited for Jill," said co-head coach Sara White. "Charlotte is an excellent franchise and it's a great opportunity for her. This is a great moment for Jill and the University of Louisville women's basketball program."
Morton joined NC State's Summer Erb, Florida's Tiffany Travis, Duke's Peppi Browne and Louisiana Tech's Shaka Massey as Charlotte's draft picks.
Morton will report to Charlotte for training camp on May 3.
