Lady Cards Open Basketball Season With Win Over UNC Asheville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville Lady Cards opened their 1999-2000 campaign with a convincing 79-56 win over UNC Asheville Saturday night at Freedom Hall.
The Lady Cards started out slow as UNC Asheville jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first five minutes. After a timeout, Louisville connected on two straight baskets to cut the deficit to two. Following a three-point play by UNCA's Emily Hill, the Lady Cards went on a 17-2 run to take a 26-16 lead with 3:26 left in the first half.
All-America Candidate Jill Morton led the comeback, scoring eight of her 10 first-half points during the run. Morton finished the game with 17 points and five assists.
"We turned up our intensity after that timeout," said Morton. "We started out a little timid, but we definitely didn't want to be behind at the half."
The Louisville defense forced 23 UNC Asheville turnovers, including 13 in the first half. The Lady Cards turned those turnovers into 29 points.
Sophomore Janelle Antoine made a big contribution to he win. Antoine, who averaged just 2.2 points last season, led the Lady Cards with a career-high 23 points.
The Lady Cards opened the second half with a 19-6 run to go up 53-32, but UNC Asheville countered with an 11-2 run to get back within 12. The Lady Cards responded with a 13-5 run to take a 20-point lead to put the game out of reach.
Senior Alison Bass put in a double-double performance with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
