Lady Cards Fall 84-70 At Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. - Arkansas State forward Tanisha Johnson scored 21 points and hit 9-of-11 shots from the field to lead Arkansas State to an 84-70 win over the Lady Cards on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro, Ark.
Louisville was led by Jill Morton's 16 points. Morton scored 14 of her points in the opening half, but was held to two points in the final 20 minutes. Alison Bass added 14 points for the Lady Cardinals.
ASU held Louisville to 28 percent shooting in the opening half as the Lady Indians opened up a 42-28 lead by halftime. Morton scored 14 of the Lady Cards' 28 first-half points.
The game was close for most of the first half with Arkansas State holding a slim 16-14 lead with 10:08 left before halftime. But Louisville was held to six points over the next seven minutes as the Lady Indians built their advantage up to as many as 19 points in the closing minutes of the first half.
An 8-0 run started things as Natalie Goodall knocked down a 3-pointer. Hagood followed with a steal and layup and three free throws gave ASU a 27-15 lead with 8:06 left before intermission. A 3-pointer by Morton ended the scoring drought but the Lady Indians outscored Louisville, 12-2 over the next four minutes.
Johnson scored seven of ASU's points in that span, including a 3-pointer to finish the run with 3:32 left in the half, giving ASU a 39-20 lead.
But Morton scored the next eight points on a 3-pointer, a conventional three-point play and two free throws, to cut ASU's lead to 39-28 with :58.9 seconds to play. A jumper by Evans at the buzzer gave the Lady Indians a 13-point cushion at intermission.
In the second half, Arkansas State shot 63 percent from the field to help hold the Lady Cards at bay. Louisville cut the Lady Indian lead to 10 points on three occasions early in the second half, but ASU was able to build the lead back up each time to as many as 19 points at one point, 74-55, with 5:04 left in the game. Then the Lady Cards went on a 8-2 run, led by Alison Bass with six points to cut the Lady Indians lead to 13. But it was not enough as the Lady Indians held on to win by 14.
