Walsh was a member of the tennis team from 1973-78. he played No. 1 singles and doubles and was the first to earn a scholarship in men's tennis. He was the first recipient of the Ed Kallay Award.

After graduating, he became the men's tennis coach where he led the Cardinals to their first Metro Conference Championship and the school's first NCAA appearance. He coached four Ed Kallay Award winners and two players that were ranked nationally in the Top 30.

He was a member of the NCAA Tennis Selection Committee before retiring from coaching to concentrate on his teaching career at Speed School. He attained the No. 1 ranking in the Kentucky Men's Professional Singles from 1979-80.
