In her first season in Louisville, she helped the Cardinals reach a 22-11 overall record and were 13-5 in ACC play. The Cards finished tied for fourth in the league standings, their 11th-straight year in the Top 5 of the conference standings. They are the only school in the ACC to finish in the Top 5 in each of the last 11 seasons. Louisville also won 20 games or more for the 15th-straight season, the fourth-longest active streak in the country.
Butler guided Jayda Curry and Tajianna Roberts to postseason recognition from the ACC. Curry was named first team All-ACC while Roberts was second team All-ACC and All-Freshman Team. Roberts earned ACC Rookie of the Week five times during the season and was one of just two freshmen to make an All-ACC team. In her final game in a collegiate uniform, Curry set a program record for most points in an NCAA game with 41.
Head coach Jeff Walz added Butler as an assistant coach in June of 2024. She comes to the Cardinals with 20 years of coaching experience and has spent the previous six seasons as the head coach at Clemson.
During her time with the Tigers, she led Clemson to 81 wins, an NCAA Tournament berth and was the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year in her first season with the Tigers. In the 18-19 season, Clemson tallied a 20-13 record, 9-7 in ACC play and reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2002 season. The Tigers only won one ACC game the previous season and the eight-win improvement was the largest turnaround by a first-year ACC head coach in conference history. Clemson advanced to the second round of the tournament after knocking off No. 8 seed South Dakota in the opening round.
Also during her time with the Tigers, she guided Delicia Washington to a first team All-ACC selection in 2021-22. It was Clemson’s first All-ACC First Team selection since the 2004 season. One of Butler’s first recruits, Amari Robinson, earned All-ACC honors in each of the previous two seasons and finished her career ranked third in points and third in rebounds all-time.
Prior to her time at Clemson, Butler spent 10 seasons at the head of the Florida Gators women’s basketball program, posting a 190-137 record in that span with eight postseason berths. She averaged 19.0 wins per season in her 10 years at Florida and was responsible for six of the program’s 15 total 20-win seasons.
Butler’s mentorship led to 10 All-SEC selections and eight All-SEC Freshman Team honorees during her 10 years at Florida. Following the spectacular 2008-09 season, Sha Brooks received WBCA and AP All-America Honorable Mention status. As a coach, Butler was a United States Marine Corps/WBCA NCAA Division I National Coach of the Year finalist in 2016.
Butler began her head coaching career at Charlotte, where the 49ers posted a 40-22 record in two seasons. She led the 49ers to two WNIT berths and the team’s first-ever share of the Atlantic 10 Conference regular-season championship. In her debut season, Butler’s team posted a 21-9 mark and a WNIT appearance, earning her Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors.
A native of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Butler enjoyed a stellar prep career at Mt. Juliet High School, where she tallied over 1,400 points. Butler went on to a standout playing career at the University of Florida. During her junior and senior seasons, she led the Gators to the first two NCAA Tournament appearances in program history.
A three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, she was voted a finalist on the CoSIDA Academic All-America District Team. Butler completed her Gator career ranked second on the program’s all-time assists list with 401. During her tenure with the Gators, Butler helped the team to 73 victories and 21 SEC wins, in addition to serving as captain during her senior season.
Butler earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from the University of Florida (’95) and a master’s in 1997. She and her wife, Dr. Janna Magette, have two boys, Nehemiah and Lincoln.
