LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Louisville women's basketball team received their first signee for the Class of 2025 with in-state forward Grace Mbugua after the Danville Christian Academy forward gave her pledge to the Cardinals Tuesday evening. After originally being committed to Liberty in the spring, she chose the Cardinals over Kentucky, Baylor, Duke, Florida, LSU, NC State and West Virginia.
"We are thrilled to announce the signing of Danville Christian's Grace "Baby" Mbugua," said head coach Jeff Walz. "Grace is an incredible talent who brings a diverse skill set and tenacity to the court. At 6-5 she can play multiple positions and provide matchup problems for her opponents. On offense, she can attack off the bounce or step behind the 3-point line to display her shooting prowess. On the defensive end, she alters shots and is a formidable inside presence with her pursuit of rebounds and put backs."
Mbugua is a 6-5 forward that has climbed up the recruiting rankings over the past year. She is a four-star prospect according to 247Sports.com. She ranks 78th overall nationally, 17th-ranked power forward nationally and is the third-ranked player out of the state of Kentucky.
"Her work ethic is unmatched and with her dedication to skill development, she will no doubt have an immediate impact on our team," stated Walz. "Our staff worked tirelessly to recruit and secure Baby, as she is arguably one of the best players to ever come out of our state. Card fans will love her loyalty, energy and enthusiasm about staying home in the bluegrass."
Mbugua is originally from Kenya but moved to Kentucky at the age of 12. Heading into her senior season at Danville Christian, she has amassed 2,007 points and 1,527 rebounds for her high school career. She has led the state in rebounding in each of the previous three seasons and the Kentucky state record for career rebounds is 1,978.
In her junior season, she averaged 25.7 points, which ranked fifth in the state, 15.4 rebounds a game, which ranked second in the state, along with 6.6 blocks per game. Mbugua guided Danville Christian to a 29-3 overall record and claimed the 12th Region championship. In the state tournament, she tallied 34 points, 14 rebounds and four blocks.
The 2024-25 Louisville Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday, November 21 from the KFC Yum Center as they host Morehead State. The Cardinals and Eagles will square off at 7 p.m. ET and it will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
