Rower heads to the Netherlands to study conservation and restoration ecology.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. --Â University of Louisville rower Madison Cicha has earned a grant with the Fulbright U.S. Student Program Award.
Â
Cicha will use her grant to go to the Netherlands to pursue a master's degree in conservation and restoration ecology at Radboud University/Nijmegen.
Â
The Cherry Hill, N.J. native was voted as captain for the past two years. She was on the Varsity Four boat that finished third in the petite final at the ACC Championships and helped the Second Varsity Eight finish second at Michigan. She moved to the Third Varsity Eight boat at Lake Wheeler where she helped the Cards clock in third. As a mainstay on the Varsity Four boat, she rowed to third place finishes at both the Sunshine State Regatta and the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational.
Â
In addition to being a leader on the rowing team, Cicha is an outstanding student majoring in Individualized Studies with a focus on environmental science with a minor in biology and Arabic. She was named to the Dean's List in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023. She is a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholar Athlete, a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll, a Red and Black Scholar and won a Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) Award.
"Maddy's capacity to drive towards bigger things stands out even in a world of high achieving student athletes," said Derek Copeland, UofL head rowing coach. "She is on a mission to make a tangible impact just like she did for our team. We are proud of what she accomplished as a Cardinal and are excited for others to see it as she completes her graduate studies. I feel like we only deserve what we earn and Maddy definitely deserves this award."
Â
The grantees named this spring add to an impressive list of winners. With 168 total since 2001, UofL has had more student Fulbrights than all Kentucky public higher education institutions.
Â
The UofL Fulbright winners were awarded grants to teach English abroad in the Slovak Republic, Spain and Jordan and to do research in Germany and the Netherlands.
Â
The Fulbright Program, administered by the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, is the U.S. government's flagship international educational exchange program.
