Cardinals Complete Day 1 of Competition at Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational
March 18, 2023 | Rowing
Oak Ridge, Tenn. -- The University of Louisville completed Day 1 of the 11th Annual Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational contested at Melton Lake Rowing Venue in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Â
The Cardinals raced Alabama and Navy in the morning session. UofL had 3V8, 2V8, and V8 boats, a 2V4 and V4 in the water today.
"I think today was a very honest showing. Everyone went out and tried their best. It was good to see where our team is at this point of the season," said Graycen West, who stroked the V4 boat. "I think there were very strong points of today and things to take away to learn and grow from. I am excited to see where this season will take us."Â
Â
The V8 boat stroked to a second place finish in 6:27.019 just behind Alabama as a highlight of the morning. UofL was third in the 3V8, V4, 2V8.
Â
In the afternoon session, UofL raced Clemson and Notre Dame with the V8 boat being edged by Notre Dame by  just two seconds.
"It was great to put all of our training together in the morning racing sessions. Lots of firsts today and we felt pretty good with what we were seeing," said UofL head coach Derek Copeland. "Some of the boats got a little excited in the afternoon sessions. It didn't transfer as productively as we'd hoped especially once we started to face some changing winds. We still saw some good things and definitely have a few things to recalibrate before the morning. That is another reason why this is a great event- plenty to learn because it is early and plenty of opportunities to improve because of the three races."
The Cardinals are hosting a 10-team field that features four team that were in the top 25 last fall, five teams who were receiving votes and three ACC foes. RV Alabama, RV Clemson, No. 14 Duke, RV Louisville, RV Navy, RV Notre Dame, No. 19 Tennessee, RV Wisconsin, and No. 4 Yale will be racing.
"Today was a good way to start the season," said Olivia Guarnaccia, the coxswain of the V4. "The team definitely was ready to go all out for each other, creating a great atmosphere and really showed where we are at together going into this spring. I think this is a good start to so many more exciting things to come this season."Â
The Cards are back on the water at 9:22 a.m. tomorrow in the final session of the ORCI.Â
"Today went well," said Kaylie Leonard, who rowed on the 2V8 boat. "We have a lot to work on but we are excited to see where the season takes us."Â
