GREENSBORO, N.C.– Three University of Louisville student-athletes were among the 53 student-athletes who have been selected as 2023 Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford Postgraduate Scholarship Award recipients, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Friday.
Louisville's Aliyah Welter, a member of the women's cross country/track & field squad, Amaya Tillman, who competes on the volleyball team, and Katie Schneider, a field hockey player, were the three student-athletes who earned honors.
This year's list includes three student-athletes who will also receive the Thacker Award and 11 student-athletes who plan to pursue professional careers in their chosen sports and were named honorary recipients.
"The student-athletes in the ACC are amazing, and we are especially proud to honor this year's class of ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients that represent our 15 world-class institutions," said ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D. "The academic and athletic resumes of these 53 student-athletes are incredible, and we applaud their dedication and commitment to excellence. We look forward to continuing to support these tremendous individuals as they approach the future, which is incredibly bright for each of them."
The Weaver-James-Corrigan-Swofford and Jim and Pat Thacker postgraduate scholarships are awarded to selected student-athletes who intend to pursue a graduate degree following completion of their undergraduate requirements. Each recipient will receive $6,000 toward his or her graduate education. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their respective sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
Welter, a redshirt senior from Monticello, Ill., is in the midst of her fifth year competing for the UofL track and field team as a pole vaulter. Over the course of her career, Welter has been honored as a USTFCCCA All-American three times and has earned All-ACC distinction four times in the women's pole vault. A five-time All-ACC Academic Team and two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic team selection, Welter earned bachelor's degrees in Health and Human Performance – Exercise Science and Sport Administration in the spring of 2022 and is currently pursuing a master's of Business Administration at UofL.
Tillman, a senior middle blocker, won the Elite 90 Award this season, an award that recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has achieved the highest athletic and academic standard. The sports administration major was tabbed the ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year. She was named an AVCA third-team All-American honoree and an AVCA East Regional First-Team award winner. The 2022 ACC Defensive Player of the Year led the ACC in blocks with 166 blocks and played in 114 sets. She notched 244 kills hitting .333, 19 aces, and 43 blocks to earn 357.0 points for the Cardinals.
Schneider was consistently among the Cardinals' scoring leaders during her time at UofL, finishing her career with 25 goals, five assists and 55 points. The forward and three-year starter from San Diego, Calif., helped the team to four straight NCAA tournament bids including the program's first quarterfinal showing and Final Four appearances as well as back-to-back ACC regular season titles in 2020 and 2021. The 2022 team co-captain was also an All-ACC second team selection in 2021.
Schneider is currently pursuing her Master of Arts in Teaching (Early Education) after earning her bachelor's degree in communication with a minor in psychology in May 2022. She is a four-time National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad selection and earned NFHCA National Scholar of Distinction honors in 2018. Additionally, she was named to the ACC All-Academic team in 2021 and is a three-time ACC Academic honor roll member. She was also awarded the 2022 Go Teach Dr Pepper Tuition Giveaway.
The ACC has selected postgraduate scholarship recipients annually since 1971. Over that time, the league has provided nearly $4.7 million to more than 1,000 ACC student-athletes.
This year's class of postgraduate scholarship recipients will be highlighted in a one-hour show on ACC Network that will air in May.
