SARASOTA, Fla. -- The University of Louisville rowing team won silver in the 2V8 as a highlight of a strong weekend of racing Saturday at the Sunshine State Invitational at Nathan Benderson Park.
The Cardinals' V8 boat finished sixth overall with a time of 6:35.74 in the grand final. UCF won the grand final with a time of 6:28.75.
Â
"We had a solid weekend performance across all boats," said Nahdeen Hassanain, who was on the V8 for the Cardinals. "We had a goal to be on the other end of the coin flip and we did exactly that. I am glad we were able to build on Oak Ridge Invitational's momentum and there's a lot more room for growth. We're gaining more and more confidence with every race and learning a lot about ourselves in the process. This weekend brought about a lot of excitement and I can't wait for what's next."
Â
Louisville's 2V8 boat won silver in the grand final, finished second with a time of 6:36.70 in a tightly contested finish, just 1.81 seconds behind UCF's boat's first place.
"Since our performance at the Cardinal Invitational, the fire within us has only grown stronger," said Neala Marshall of the 2V8 boat. "We came into this weekend with goals to improve our third 500 meters and gain confidence throughout the race. Our focus in these areas paid off and is motivating us to keep pushing for more. Pressure was a huge privilege this weekend and we are ready to build off of our accomplishments."Â
Â
In the petite final the Louisville V4 crew crossed the finish first with a time of 7:29.65. The 2V4 boat was sixth in the grand final with a time of 7:49.30.
Â
"We came in this weekend looking to see the pay off of all of our hard work and we did," said Natalie Stuckey. "The focus we have been putting into technique and our sprints was evident. We are continuing to build our speed and I am excited to see what the rest of the season holds. We have a very strong, gritty team and we are not letting up."
Â
The Cards are competing against Florida schools Central Florida, Miami, Stetson and Jacksonville. Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Louisville, Northeastern, Tulsa and Drexel are also in the water in Sarasota.
