Cards Fall Short at No. 24 North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell 4-1 to No. 24 North Carolina in an ACC road match Friday evening.

The Cardinals (13-6, 5-2 ACC) will continue their ACC road swing on Sunday with match at No. 17 Duke.

The Tar Heels (10-6, 5-2) took a highly competitive doubles point to start the match with wins on courts X and 3. At the three-spot, Benjamin and Sigouin and Peter Murphy topped Matthew Fung and Alex Wesbrooks 6-1 to give UNC an early edge. The remaining courts were locked in battle with each match tied a 5-5 before North Carolina's fifth-ranked duo of Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger edged Etienne and Tin Chen 7-5 at No. 1. On court two, Louisville's Natan Rodrigues and Sergio Hernandez were trailing No. 67 Logan Zapp and Casey Kania 6-5 when the doubles point was secured.

In singles action, North Carolina extended its lead to at No. 6 where Peter Murphy topped Matthew Fung 6-1, 6-0. On court 2, No. 28 Brian Cernoch defeated Chen 6-4, 6-2 put the Tar Heels up 3-0.

Louisville got on the scoreboard on court 1 where Etienne Donnet beat Benjamin Sigouin 6-4, 6-4, bringing the score to 3-1.

The match was decided at the four-spot with Kiger's 6-1, 7-6 (4) win over Hernandez.
