She has been named to all three player of the year watch lists this season
ATLANTA — University of Louisville junior guard Hailey Van Lith was named to the Wade Watch List for the 2023 Wade Trophy, the Women's Basketball Association announced this morning. The Wade Trophy is presented to the best player in college women's basketball.
Van Lith has been selected for all three player of the year watch lists this season as she was named to the Naismith Trophy Women's Watch List and the Wooden Award Watch List earlier this season. She was also named to the preseason All-ACC team, the Drysdale Award Watch List and a preseason All-American by The Athletic.
Van Lith has played in six games for the Cardinals and leads the team in scoring with 21.2 points per game. That mark ranks second in the ACC and 14th nationally. She has scored 20 points in three of her six games and dating back to last season, has tallied 20 or more in nine of her last 15 games. She scored 28 points in the season opener against Cincinnati, the fourth-most points in a season-opener in program history. Van Lith also ranks second on the team in rebounds with 4.8 per game and recorded her second career double-double with 12 points and 10 boards against IUPUI.
The Wade Trophy — now in its 46th year — is the oldest and most prestigious national player of the year award in college women's basketball. It is named in honor of the late, legendary Delta State University head coach Lily Margaret Wade, who won three consecutive national championships with the Lady Statesmen. First awarded in 1978 by the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD), now known as SHAPE America, the Wade Trophy has been presented to the WBCA NCAA Division I National Player of the Year since 2001.
The Wade Watch list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Selection Committee. The committee will review the list midseason to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2022-23 season.
