Engstler, Van Lith Compete for USA at FIBA 3x3 U23 Nations League

VOIRON, France – University of Louisville women's basketball's Emily Engstler (New York, N.Y.) and Hailey Van Lith (Wenatchee, Wash.) played with the USA 3x3 women's team at the FIBA 3x3 U23 Nations League this week in Voiron, France.

They were joined on the team by Kylee Watson (Oregon/Linwood, N.J.) and Madison Hayes (NC State/Chattanooga, Tenn.).

The USA competed in the Europe-America conference of the FIBA 3x3 U23 Nations League, with stop four being held on Aug. 2, stop five taking place on Aug. 3 and the sixth and final stop on Aug. 4.

They opened play with two wins in stop four on Monday, downing Spain 16-9 and Israel 21-10. With a 2-0 record, they won Group A and faced France in the final.

In the final, France jumped out to 9-4 lead. The USA pulled within 10-8, but then France extended the lead to 17-9 with under a minute remaining and went on to win 21-10.

On Tuesday, they returned to action with a 14-3 win over Great Britain. In a rematch with France, Van Lith made two late free throws to tie the game at 15-15 with 22 seconds remaining. Then in overtime, Engstler's layup evened the score at 16-16. But, France was fouled on the next possession and made the free throw to win the game, 17-16.

In the sixth and final stop on Wednesday, USA narrowly defeated Great Britain 19-17 in the opener and then rolled past Israel 19-9 to win Group A and advance to the final against France.

However, USA came up short in their attempt to avenge the previous two losses to the French team as they fell 15-13.

The USA team finished the week with a 5-3 record with all three losses coming to France.
