
Merissah Russell Competing for Canada at FIBA Women’s AmeriCup 2021

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - University of Louisville women's basketball's Merissah Russell is competing for the Canadian Senior Women's National Team at the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2021, which takes place in San Juan, Puerto Rico from June 11-19.
Russell is one of 12 players, and just one of four collegiate players, to represent Canada at the AmeriCup.
Canada opened play with a decisive 101-41 win over the U.S. Virgin Islands on Saturday. Russell finished with six points on 2-of-4 shooting from deep in the victory.
Canada defeated Brazil 71-67 on Sunday and rolled past El Salvador 98-41 on Monday. In the win over El Salvador, Russell had nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, while adding two steals.
Canada closed pool play with a perfect 4-0 record following a 74-40 win over Colombia.
They defeated the Dominican Republic 90-53 in the quarterfinals on Thursday, but fell 65-61 to Puerto Rico in the semifinals on Friday. Canada closed play with an 87-82 loss against Brazil in the third place game on Saturday.
By reaching the semifinals, Canada earned a spot in one of the 2022 World Cup qualifying tournaments. Canada won silver at the 2019 AmeriCup, falling by 19 points to the American team in the final.
